The good news is that a small city home can still be a brilliant place to spend the summer. Here's how to make it work, without breaking the bank or the thermostat. 

Understand this year's heat before you plan around it 

The Met Office has confirmed the UK's third heatwave of 2026, with parts of the south seeing highs around 34°C this month. That follows an exceptional June, when a Red Extreme Heat warning was issued and temperatures topped 37°C in Norfolk. UKHSA has issued heat-health alerts covering large parts of England. 

None of that means writing off summer. It just means planning your week around the heat rather than fighting it. Check the Met Office UK forecast before you commit to outdoor plans, and treat the hottest part of the afternoon, roughly midday to 4pm, as indoor time. 

Keep your home cool without hiking your energy bill 

Air con units and fans help, but they're not the only tools. A few habits make a real difference: 

- Close curtains or blinds on south-facing windows first thing, before the sun hits them. Once a room has heated up, it's much harder to cool down again. 

- Open windows early in the morning and late evening when the air outside is actually cooler than inside. Close them again once the day warms up. 

- A fan pointed at an open window overnight can pull cooler air through, which uses far less energy than air con running all night. 

- If you work from home, move your desk to the coolest room for the afternoon rather than trying to cool the room you're already in. 

Make the most of a small outdoor space 

You don't need a garden to enjoy being outside. A balcony, roof terrace or even a windowsill can become a proper retreat with a bit of thought: 

- Go for cushions and rugs in fabrics that won't fade or feel scratchy in direct sun. 

- Potted plants do double duty. They look good and some, like lavender or jasmine, also help keep flying insects away in the evening. 

- String lights turn a small space into somewhere you actually want to sit once it cools down. 

- If your balcony faces the sun most of the day, an outdoor umbrella or shade sail will make it usable far earlier in the day. 

Get out and find the green spaces near you 

Parks, canal paths, cycle routes, and community gardens are all free and usually a few degrees cooler than the street. Early morning is the best time for a walk, a run or outdoor yoga, both because it's cooler and because parks tend to be quieter.

Support local traders at farmers' markets 

Farmers' markets are worth seeking out this time of year. Seasonal UK produce is at its best, and you're supporting small businesses which is an added bonus. It's also a good low-cost outing when it's too hot to be out for long. Grab what you need, try something you've never cooked before, and head home before the heat properly sets in. 

Sort your space out while it's still manageable 

A cluttered flat feels smaller and hotter than it actually is. Before the next heatwave lands, it's worth spending an hour clearing surfaces, sorting out what you don't use, and creating one calm corner in your home. A reading nook by a window or a tidy desk makes a real difference to how liveable a small space feels in summer.
